Lovers of classical music who take that art seriously enough that they have a low tolerance for passive listening, may bristle when their friends or colleagues ask them to find some "nice background music" for a cocktail party, reception, barbecue, or so forth. I, for one, never choose to listen to music, especially jazz or classical, without immersing myself into it with full attention. Nonetheless, there is some "classical music" that eludes such concentration -- works like these well-crafted and tuneful but rather pallid concerti of eighteenth century Neapolitan composers -- which are so insipid that the attention of even the most rigourous listener is surely bound to drift! Still, for that typical party or reception, there is this disc, to which you can resort without being guilty of abusing music that deserves more, surely, than these works do, to be merely the pleasant background to chatter, flirtatious giggles and sighs, clinking of glasses, rattling of porcelain and cutlery, and other such sounds.
For those potential listeners who evince some interest in this CD, and for the sake of players of the mandolin(e), a potentially delightful solo instrument, I would note for them that there is an alternate "mail order (and/or Internet) only" edition of these same recorded performances (Musical Heritage Society 5192296). Since the various national Amazon WWW sites do not list the works included either at all or with sufficient clarity, I summarise them here, in the order in which they occur on the CD, as concerti, all with string accompaniment, respectively in G Major by Domenico Caudioso; in G Major by Giuseppe Giuliano; in D Major (the so-called "Echo" Concerto) by Gian Francesco Eterardi; and in F Major by by Gaspare Gabbellone (a.k.a. Caballone).
The music-making, as always when Claudio Scimone conducts, is superb, and the mandolinists (Alessandro Pitrelli and Bonifaccio Bianchi, taking turns as soloist in these works) sound more than well equipped to the modest technical and musical demands of these works. Classical mandolinists do not have much of any truly stellar repertoire, even in works by genuinely significant composers, written specifically for their instrument, so these concerti suffice as well as most for the instrument, to represent it. The mandolin and the related alto-range "mandola" and the "mandocello" (the lattermost being a deeper and more sustainedly sonorous instrument than the other two, this instrument family’s equivalent of the violoncello), of course have -- like the banjo -- vast realms, and reams, of music and opportunity for virtuosic achievement in string band, bluegrass, gospel, folk (and "folk revival"), country-western, ragtime, jazz, and dance music (and, of course, all those Neapolitan serenades and that Italian pop!) that dwarf what a conscientious performer of the instrument’s middling classical repertory has at his disposal; a few works for classical mandolin surpass the level of the works on this CD, but, really, not very many so do, therefore, "what the heck", enjoy what is here, too, for its modest worth. It really is a shame that the mandolin’s classical repertory is so limited, in every way, compared to that of such plectral instrumental relatives as the lute or guitar, since this "darlin’ li’l plucker" has a silvery sound of such delectable piquancy.
The guests at your cocktail party -- or whatever -- may express, vaguely, more pleasure in this sonic fare than you feel much yourself, but you just possibly may join in with them in praising the contents of this CD with mildly expressed but genuine encomia when you listen to it for the real (albeit quite limited) charms that these concerti -- and certainly the excellent performers of them -- can convey, when you are in a relaxed and undemanding enough mood to enjoy them.
