As a ballet-goer, I find that hearing the music in advance enhances the performance, and listening to it afterwards improves my recollection. My daughter is an aspiring dancer, and having the music for her variations helps train her ear (not to mention the fact that she likes to have the music for extra practice!). So while I’m a beginning collector of ballet music, I’m a serious one. The liner notes are too skimpy to do justice to this wonderful album, so I pulled out my battered copy of "Balanchine’s Complete Stories of the Great Ballets" to confirm that this is the treasure I thought it was. I recognized Flower Festival in Genzano and Napoli as Bournonville ballets; evidently Etudes belongs to the Royal Danish repertory as well, and the company also dances La Sonnambula (billed here as "Night Shadow"). With the exception of La Sylphide, it’s almost impossible to find recordings of the music for the Bournonville repertory. That’s what makes this album a must-have. La Sonnambula appears to be the entire score, or close to it (about 35 minutes). I’ve never seen the complete ballet, but I saw Suzanne Farrell as the Sleepwalker in a workshop. Her performance was so poignant, so heartbreakingly beautiful, that I remember it more than 25 years later. Flower Festival in Genzano (pas de deux and variations) is a charming and frothy piece, as its name suggests. Napoli (there’s about 15 minutes of music in the suite) is surprisingly majestic and impressive, with a full range of variations - reminiscent in feel to the Paquita and Raymonda variations. Etudes includes 26 variations - from andante to a fast-paced tarantella. According to Balanchine’s description, the ballet is basically the story of a dancer’s development, from the easiest exercises to the most advanced solos. Drigo’s pas de deux and variations for Le Corsaire completes the album. And if you wonder why a Californian shops at Amazon UK, France, and Germany - it’s because the selection of ballet music is outstanding!
